| In 1938, Chubby landed a full-time position with a Gainesville-based Country band, the Jubilee Hillbillies, with whom he played in a variety of styles, especially Western Swing. American entry into WWII took a heavy toll on the band lesbo and Chubby took advantage of an opportunity to join Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys at the Grand Ole Opry in 1942. Chubby remained with the band until 1948, recording many sides with the original full Bluegrass group consisting of Monroe, lesbo Flatt, Scruggs, Howard Watts, and himself. He worked on all of the Monroe numbers lesbo except those vocal quartets that did not use a fiddle. He also did a few sessions with other artists including one-time Blue Grass Boy Clyde Moody, who collaborated with him on composing Moody’s hit recording of the Shenandoah Waltz. In January 1948, Chubby went with Clyde to the Washington, D. C., area where for a time, they worked for Connie B. |
