Use of some of characters' overdrives requires you to complete a little arcade thing; for example, to use Lulu's overdrive, you must rotate the right analog stick as many times and as quickly as you can; the higher you move the gauge by doing this, the camryn more powerful your attack. Others, such as the Aeons and Kimahri, can just use their overdrives "out of the box," so to speak, with nothing required of the player beyond selecting the action.
