Soon she's wearing sundresses and contact lenses and catching the eye of neighborhood hunk, Ian (John Corbett, of "Sex and the City" fame, whose oily mane brings to mind Harlequin romance novels). Toula's stodgy rent father wants his little girl married, but not to a Waspy high-school teacher. The interaction between Ian's boisterous future in-laws and his dour parents are supposed to be the movie's main source of mirth. Ethnic humor has always been a staple of comedy, as clichéd as a pie-in-the-face. Some claim there's nothing wrong rent with ethnic humor (as long as you belong to rent that ethnicity). It's funny because it resonates as real. But this tired brand of self-effacing humor, exploited by comediennes like Margaret Cho and Vardalos (who honed her autobiographical one-woman show at the Second City stage) feels one-dimensional on film. No doubt, the entertainment industry will keep ethnic humor in its arsenal—along with stereotyping, mafia movies, and actors who portray Italians as bimbos and bums.
